Mechanisms of surface nanostructuring of Al2O3 and MgO by grazing incidence irradiation with swift heavy ions

چکیده
We experimentally discovered that Al2O3 and MgO exhibit well-pronounced nanometric modifications on the surfaces when irradiated under grazing incidence with 23 MeV I beam, in contrast to normal irradiation same ion beam no damage was found. Moreover, ions these two materials produce notably different structures: grooves surrounded nanohillocks vs. smoother, roll-like discontinuous structures of Al2O3. To explain results, detailed numerical simulations were performed. identified a presence surface inhibits recrystallization process, thereby preventing transient tracks from recovery, thus forming observable nanopatterns. Furthermore, difference viscosities molten states explains differences created nanostructures. Our results provide deeper understanding fundamental processes nanostructuring, potentially allowing for controlled production periodic

Swift heavy ion irradiation of SrTiO3 under grazing incidence
The irradiation of SrTiO3 single crystals with swift heavy ions leads to modifications of the surface. The details of the morphology of these modifications depends strongly on the angle of incidence and can be characterized by atomic force microscopy. At glancing angles, discontinuous chains of nanosized hillocks appear on the surface. The latent track radius can be determined from the variatio...
متن کاملDegradation of polyimide under the irradiation with swift heavy ions
This study concentrates on radiation-induced ageing effects of polymers planned as insulating materials in the rapidly cycling superconducting magnets presently being developed for the FAIR facility. Although beam control and minimization of beam losses will be a major issue, the exposure of insulating parts (e.g. polyimide, polyetherimide, and glassenforced epoxy-compounds) of various accelera...
متن کاملModel for nucleation of dislocation loops in graphite under irradiation with swift heavy ions
Irradiation of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) with swift heavy ions demonstrated that damage of the material is originated by electronic energy loss [1]. To support further analysis of experimental data from Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray scattering, etc., some assumptions about damage structure are necessary. It is reasonable to assume that not only primary Frenkel d...
متن کاملSurface Nanostructuring of TiO2 Thin Films by Ion Beam Irradiation
This work reports a procedure to modify the surface nanostructure of TiO2 anatase thin films through ion beam irradiation with energies in the keV range. The irradiation with N ions leads to the formation of a layer with voids at a depth similar to the ion projected range. By setting the ion projected range few tens of nanometres below the surface of the film, well ordered nanorods appear align...
متن کاملDislocation loop formation by swift heavy ion irradiation of metals.
A coupled two-temperature, molecular dynamics methodology is used to simulate the structural evolution of bcc metals (Fe and W) and fcc metals (Cu and Ni) following irradiation by swift heavy ions. Electronic temperature dependent electronic specific heat capacities and electron-phonon coupling strengths are used to capture the full effects of the variation in the electronic density of states. ...
